SAGE Publications: RSuite CMS as content repository and automated delivery platform

Background: SAGE Publications, an independent international publisher of journals, books, encyclopedia, databases and electronic media, selected RSuite for reliable content storage, delivery of content to customers and partners, and content analytics.

Solution: RSuite CMS ingests SAGE's XML and binary journal content. Based on a series of business rules, RSuite pushes SAGE's journal content through multiple automated workflow routines and delivery processes, including a delivery to HighWire Press. RSuite stores SAGE's XML journal content, related DTDs, as well as non-XML files, such as PDFs for each journal article. SAGE configured RSuite's workflow features to leverage RSuite's action handlers that automate processes for multiple content types. These action handlers automate quality assurance functions, such as file validation, DOI confirmation, and element value verification.

Result: XML-based configuration files manage all content delivery functions including content selection, packaging, and distribution. System administrators can easily extend and modify these configuration files as needed, such as specifying a new delivery location parameter. RSuite's workflow functionality minimizes human interaction. Editorial direction is required only when an exception condition, defined by the business logic, is detected. When exceptions are found, task notifications are routed to the appropriate production group. Automated business rule checks include:

• Editorial checks and corrections
• XML validation
• Content validation
• Metadata enrichment
• Conversion of print optimized PDFs for web delivery
• XSL transformation

The system also serves as the repository of record for all of SAGE's journal content
