The MIT Press Employs RSuite to Support the Creation, Management, and Dissemination of Book and Journal Content

Background: The MIT Press publishes approximately 200 new books a year and over 40 journals. The MIT Press has a major publishing presence in fields as diverse as architecture, social theory, economics, cognitive science, and computational science, as well as a long-term commitment to both design excellence and the efficient and creative use of new technologies. To maximize content re-use and to overhaul its entire publishing division, The MIT Press outlined a CMS strategy to lead its books and journals division into the new decade. RSuite along with complementary technologies were implemented.

Solution: The MIT Press documented its workflow steps for both its books and journals division. A review of its editorial and production steps was conducted and workflow was streamlined to eliminate redundancies. RSuite’s workflow tools now manage the editorial and production process, automating content processes such as zipping up all Word files, images, and XML and posting on a server for composition vendors and streamlining content delivery to push content to targets at the right time and in the right format. Production managers track content via RSuite’s workflow status reports. The native XML storage support that is offered via RSuite ensures rapid discovery of content, assisting new product creation.

Result: The MIT Press now houses all content in one central location, eliminating confusion related to versioning and offering a secure storage solution for XML, Word files, PDFs, images, and other related assets. Implementing RSuite enables The MIT Press to:

• quickly determine status of articles, issues, and chapters as well as proactively address problems or bottlenecks
• integrate with its current title management system for metadata management and status
• eliminate redundancies and share human resources across its book and journal divisions
