
Howard Ratner is the Chief Technology Officer and Executive VP for Nature Publishing Group (NPG). Based in New York, Howard is charge of US operations and has global responsibilities for production, manufacturing, IT, web development and operations. He began his career in scholarly publishing as a copy editor and worked his way up through journal and book production, IT, and web publishing at Wiley and Springer. Howard helped launch the DOI, CrossRef, and CLOCKSS initiatives and serves on the boards of the Society for Scholarly Publishing, CrossRef and CLOCKSS. He also leads CrossRef Metadata Services and is a member of the CCC Publisher Advisory Group and STM Future Lab committee.
He has been an instructor for NYU’s Publishing program and a regular speaker at SSP, PSP, NFAIS, STM, NISO, and MarkLogic events. Howard is also a contributor to the SSP Scholarly Kitchen.
